Healthy Bones

During my recent visit to Toronto I was delighted to meet Dr George Grant at the Academy of Wellness.  Dr Grant was keen for me to experience the Biofeedback service that he offers so that I would be able to tell other women about it.  I am so pleased that I took up that opportunity.

The process involved holding a metallic cylindrical device in my right hand for a few minutes.  The device uses electro-dermal sensors to measure galvanic skin resistance (see more details at http://www.drgwellness.com/biofeedback/).  The process was quick, pain-free and non-invasive.

The results from the device generated a report of 29 health indicators including the health of major organs, skin, immune system and allergies.

So the good news is that I am generally healthy.  However, the report highlighted that I am experiencing some calcium depletion which could impact on my bone density if it goes untreated.  And that could lead to osteoporosis and broken bones.

It is not unusual for women in peri-menopause and post-menopause to experience this problem.  Oestrogen facilitates the uptake of calcium from the blood and inhibits its loss.  Therefore, as oestrogen levels fall during peri-menopause, bones can begin to lose mass and disintegrate.

There is lots of action you can take if your calcium levels are depleted and you want to have healthy bones:

  • Nutrition:- eat a more alkaline diet such as fruit and vegetables (particularly broccoli), sprouted seeds, yoghurt, almonds, brazils and buck-wheat.  Reduce acidic foods such as animal protein and cheese.   Avoid bran, spinach, rhubarb and fizzy drinks.  Note: the tannin in tea can prevent the absorption of calcium so it is preferable not to drink tea with meals.
  • Exercise – regular weight bearing exercise helps to strengthen bone and increase bone mass.  This includes walking, jogging, dancing and bouncing.
  • Lifestyle – stop smoking and reduce alcohol intake
  • Food Supplements – calcium citrate, magnesium, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, zinc and boron.  It is possible to buy combinations of these vitamins and minerals specifically for menopause

Many thanks to Dr Grant
