Your Menopause Heart

One of the most disconcerting symptoms of menopause, for me and some of my clients anyway, is the changes in the heart beat. I notice it most in the moments before a hot flush but other women feel it at different times during the day. Some women feel it like palpitations and others feel like their heart is racing or fluttering. What is that about and how is it related to menopause?

The changes in heart rate are related to changes in hormone levels and the change in the balance of progesterone and estrogen. Both estrogen and progesterone levels fall…  read more

Gratitude is Good For You

Last Saturday, 21st September, was National Gratitude Day.  It passed me by because I was at a seminar.  I was listening to a speaker who really demonstrated the value of gratitude for our physical, mental and emotional health.

Judy Van Niekerk was born in Ireland.  For 20 years she was imprisoned by her father and subjected to sexual and physical abuse.  She finally escaped and went to South Africa where she became a serial entrepreneur.  Working with tribal leaders she…  read more

The Weight Loss Game

A couple of years ago I was running a course on Mindful Weight Loss.  A number of the people who came along had a history of losing and re-gaining weight.   They knew how to lose weight but they didn’t know how to keep it off.

As we know, if you have a laugh while you are learning you tend to remember what you have learnt. So as part of the course I developed a ‘snakes and ladders’ game to illustrate the actions you can take that boost you towards your weight loss goal and the things that stop your progress.

Antidepressants for Hot Flashes? No thanks!

In America, the FDA has recently approved the use of an antidepressant, Brisdelle, for the treatment of moderate to severe hot flashes associated with menopause.  Brisdelle is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and it contains the active ingredient paroxetine.   The approved dosage is 7.5mg which is lower than that used for major depressive disorders.

Antidepressants are not licensed for treating hot flashes in the UK but the NHS website comments that “there are several antidepressant medications that may be effective”.  They then list the possible side effects as “nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, anxiety and sleeping problems”.
