Your Menopause Heart

One of the most disconcerting symptoms of menopause, for me and some of my clients anyway, is the changes in the heart beat. I notice it most in the moments before a hot flush but other women feel it at different times during the day. Some women feel it like palpitations and others feel like their heart is racing or fluttering. What is that about and how is it related to menopause?

The changes in heart rate are related to changes in hormone levels and the change in the balance of progesterone and estrogen. Both estrogen and progesterone levels fall during perimenopause (the stage either side of menopause) but progesterone lvels fall more consistently giving rise to a greater relative level of estrogen.

During times of raised heart rate, for example when you are stressed or anxious, progesterone helps to restore the heart rate to normal levels. One effect of estrogen is that it dilates and contracts the coronary arteries. It also helps to regulate heart rate and breathing. The changes in the relative levels of these two hormones gives rise to the fluctuations in heart rate that you experience.

So what can you do about it?

  1. Dietary changes. Reduce or eliminate caffeinated drinks
  2. Lifestyle changes. Stop smoking. Reduce intake of alcohol.
  3. Relaxation. Regular practice of yoga, tai chi, meditation or other techniques

If the symptoms are high frequency or intense, consult your medical practitioner or a menopause expert.
