Happy people live longer.

Laughter really is the best medicine.  It can:

  • Benefit the heart
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower stress hormones
  • Strengthen abdominal muscles
  • Relax the body
  • Reduce pain through the production of endorphins

Happiness is a habit and it is a habit that you can learn.  Here are some suggestions of developing the happiness habit:

Smile Regularly – smiling boosts the production of neurotransmitter, dopamine and serotonin into  the blood.  These hormones improve energy, focus, mood, attention, alertness and libido and provides feelings of joy, confidence, happiness, an overall sense of well-being and a mild euphoria. When you smile at someone their brain release dopamine and if they smile back at you, you get another hit of it! A virtuous circle.

Take time every day to laugh.   You can do this by reading a funny book or watching your favourite comedy or listening to a funny radio programme or, even better, ringing a friend who always make you laugh

Adopt a happy body posture. Stand or sit upright, shoulders back, chin up, eyes forward or looking up, and smile. Your brain will get the message that you are happy. Put a pen between your lips sideways and your brain will read this as a smile and release those happy hormones into your system.

Keep a Positivity Journal. At the end of every day, make a note three positive things you have noticed every day. Might be a kind word, a hug, a friendly message, a sunbeam or the dog wagging it’s tail. The more you notice positive things, the more come to you.

Carry out random acts of kindness Do something nice for another person.  It might be sending a thank you note to someone or helping a stranger with a shopping bag or a giving a kind word to a shop worker. We are hard-wired for kindness and it is good for our physical and emotional health.
